April 15, 2009

Final Stats

The NYIT baseball team pounded out 15 hits and scored a season-high 16 runs in a 16-5 win over Siena Wednesday on Long Island. Kevin Quaranto had three hits and three runs scored for the Saints.

Greg Gilory led the way for the Bears, going 4-for-5 with a career-high six RBI and a run scored. Effrey Valdez and Mike Morelli each hit three run homers as the Bears improved 11-19 on the season. The loss drops the Saints to 8-25.

Siena jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning against NYIT starter Louie Bernardi. Dan Paolini singles home the first run of the game and Phil Cahill followed later in the inning with a two-RBI double.

The Bears responded by scoring twice in the bottom of the first inning. Gilroy delivered the big hit, a two run single down the left field line with two outs.

Bernardi, who had not pitched for seven days, shook off the rust after the first inning and settled down, allowing just two hits over the next four innings. The Bears took the lead for good in the bottom half of the second with a four-run rally, highlighted by Valdez's three run homerun over the left field fence.

Gilroy drove in two more runs in the fourth inning on a single that made the score 6-2 and he drove in two additional runs in a four run fifth inning that opened up a 12-2 lead for NYIT.

NYIT rounded out the scoring by plating four runs in the seventh, with Morelli's three run homerun to deep centerfield pushing the Bears tally up to 16 runs.

Bernardi improved to 2-0 on the season as he allowed three runs on five hits with two strikeouts in five innings of work. Valdez finished the afternoon 3-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored and Morelli went 2-for-3 with three RBI and three runs scored in the win.

Siena returns to action against Rider this weekend at Siena field in a rematch of the 2008 MAAC Championship series.
