Final Stats
Canisius swept a MAAC baseball doubleheader at Siena Saturday, winning the first game 19-13 and the second 3-1. Freshman phenom Dan Paolini had six hits in seven at bats for the Saints, raising his team-leading batting average to .425.
Canisius scored six times in the second inning of game one to build an early 7-0 lead and controlled the action the rest of the way. Kevin Mailloux and Kevin Mahoney each homered and finished with four hits for the Griffs.
Siena scored 12 of its 13 runs in three innings, rallying to within six runs after trailing 13-1. Paolini and Gary DerHagopian each went deep for Siena.
Canisius starter Shane Davis earned the victory despite allowing 13 runs (12 earned) in 7.1 innings of work.
Paolini went 4-for-5 for Siena and Jason DeFilippo had three hits. Eric Mruczek and Bill Cardona each added two hits.
The two teams combined for 32 runs and 36 hits in the opener, a stark contrast from the second game.
In the nightcap, Alex MacKenzie out-dueled Siena's Kyle Sumple in a 3-1 Canisius win.
Siena scored its only run in the first when Jason DeFilippo scored on a wild pitch. Canisius tied the game with a run in the third and scored the eventual game-winning runs with a two-run rally in the fourth.
The loss spoiled a strong outing by Sumple who went 6.1 innings and allowed just three runs and five hits. MacKenzie went the distance scattering seven hits and allowing just the one run. He did not walk a batter.
Paolini was the only Saint to post a multihit game, finishing 2-for-2. Mailloux went 2-for-4 with an RBI to lead the Canisius offense.
The two teams will finish the series with a single game Sunday at noon. It's the final home game of the season for the Saints who will honor their senior class prior to the first pitch.
