Canisius scored four runs in the first and never looked back in completing a three-game MAAC sweep of Siena with a 7-1 win on Sunday afternoon in Loudonville. The loss put a damper on Siena's final home game of the season and the final home contest for the Saints' seven graduating seniors.
Mike Goemans pitched a complete game for Canisius allowing just six hits and one unearned run.
Freshman Dan Paolini finished 2-for-4, capping off a monster week in which he batted .720 (18-25) with four home runs and a 2.070 OPS. His batting average is now a MAAC-best .427 and he sits just two hits shy of the school's single-season record with 79 safeties on the season.
The Griffs scored four runs in the first on just one hit. Senior starter Will Hassett hit the first three batters of the game and then walked the fourth to account for Canisius' first run. After an RBI ground out, Steve McQuail delivered an RBI single and a fourth run scored on a throwing error.
Hassett settled down over his final four innings of work, allowing just one more run and left with the Saints trailing 5-1. Freshman Dan Pendleton followed with three solid innings of relief, allowing one hit and one earned run. Senior Matt Moberg worked a perfect ninth inning, striking out one.
Senior Phil Cahill drove in Siena's only run with a sacrifice fly in the fourth plating Kevin Quaranto.
McQuail homered in the third - he was joined by Ian Choy with two hits for the visitors.
Siena will complete its season next weekend with a three-game set at Iona.
