For a second straight year, the highly anticipated matchup on the pitch between Siena and Iona proved to be a very physical affair and for a second straight year the Gaels prevailed. In a game that featured a combined 25 fouls and four cards, Iona shutout the Saints 2-0 Sunday afternoon in New Rochelle, N.Y.
Despite six first half corners, the Saints (5-6-1, 2-1) managed just three shots to Iona's (4-7-1, 2-2) 10. The Gaels got on the board in the 20' on a Rob Hernandez-Raaen header to take a 1-0 lead. Iona, which held a decided 17-7 advantage in shots for the game, again controlled tempo in the second half and put the match away in the 63' on Julian Grajales' first goal of the season.
The defeat was the Saints' first in four October matches. Siena had entered the game ranking 18th nationally in scoring, but was shutout for the third time this season. The Saints have scored just five goals in their six losses this season as opposed to 20 goals total in their five wins and one tie.
Jesse Fullerton was called upon to make just two saves to notch the shutout for the Gaels, while Phil Chabot stopped five shots in defeat for the Saints.
The Saints return home Friday when they host Manhattan at Siena Turf Field in a 3 p.m. kickoff.
