Saints Put up Touchdown, Smackdown Saint Peter's

Oct. 24, 2010

Box Score

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - Sunday's during the fall are synonymous with football and thus touchdowns. But on this Sunday in Loudonville, the Saints from the other sport of football were the team scoring a touchdown. The Saints erupted for a season-high seven goals as they cruised to a 7-1 victory over MAAC-leading Saint Peter's this afternoon at Siena Turf Field.

Saint Peter's (8-5-1, 4-1-1) had entered the match having won six in a row and boasted the MAAC's top defense having allowed 11 goals all season-long in their first 13 matches. But Siena's (7-6-1, 4-1) high powered offense once again could not be corralled.

Emery Welshman led the way with his first career hat trick coming during a 16 and a half minute span in the first half which gave the Saints a commanding 3-0 lead at intermission. Welshman tied his career-high with six points.

Siena's offense would not relent in the second half as the Saints peppered the back of the Peacocks' goal four more times. Lewis Davenport scored his first two career goals and James Beeston and Matt Turcio added the other tallies as nine different Saints recorded at least one point with five players tallying multiple points.

Phil Chabot, fresh off his first shutout of the year Friday, made four more saves to earn the victory. Saint Peter's keeper Tyler Clarhaut, who entered the match with a league-low 0.66 goals against average and had allowed five goals all season long, surrendered all seven of the goals while making just two saves.

Siena, which improved to 6-2-1 in their past nine matches, has outscored their conference foes 19-5 in five MAAC matches so far this fall. The seven goals scored were the most the team has posted in eight years since the program tallied an 8-2 home victory over Manhattan on Oct. 18, 2002.

The Saints, which entered the league 20th nationally in scoring, have scored four or more goals in a match a whopping five times already this season. In their seven wins and one tie, Siena has scored 31 goals for an average of 3.9 goals per game.

Siena will look to keep its winning ways going when it returns to the pitch for a pair of road tilts next weekend. The Saints begin the trip Friday night in Baltimore against Loyola at 7 p.m.
