LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - A day after celebrating his birthday and proposing to his girlfriend, Gareth Elliott's weekend got even better. Four different Saints scored led by Steve Covino's two goals as the Saints' throttled MAAC rival Marist 5-1 in the conference lid-lifter. The Saints have scored five goals in three of their four wins this season.
Siena (4-5-1, 1-0) dominated their I-87 rival Red Foxes (5-5, 0-1) from start to finish. Marist entered the game ranked fifth in the NSCAA/HendrickCars.com North Atlantic Regional Rankings, but the Saints explosive offense made them look anything but a team worthy of that ranking.
The Saints showed solid execution on set pieces, scoring their final four goals in those special situations. Covino kicked off the scoring early when in the 9' he fired a shot off the foot of the Marist keeper which deflected up and in.
Freshman Matt Hemsley made it 2-0 in the 22' with his second goal in as many matches when he served a second header into the goal. Flip throw specialist Joey Tavernese served a perfect ball into the box that Nick Viaggio headed to Hemsley who finished it.
In the second half, the Saints poured it on. Siena out-shot Marist 10-0 in the first 17 minutes of the stanza and added two more goals to put it away. Covino tallied his second of the match when he put in the rebound of his own missed PK and Emery Welshman added a tally in the 62' when he rocketed home a free kick just under the near side crossbar from the top of the 18'.
Marist got on the board a minute later on a Stephan Brossard goal, but the Saints' Matt Turcio added the final tally on a header to push the final margin back to four. Siena has now scored a whopping 17 goals in its four wins and one tie this season, while they have scored just five times in five defeats.
Siena out-shot Marist 22-11 with Covino firing six shots, while Welshman and Tavernese took five apiece.
With Siena's top two goalies Phil Chabot and Steve Skonieczny unavailable, true freshman and third-string keeper Adam Myers made his collegiate debut and play solid between the pipes, recording three saves for the victory.
The Saints return to action next Friday at Fairfield for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
