Final Stats
Sophomore Peter Verdin went 4-for-5 with two home runs and three RBI to lead Georgia to a 9-3 win over Siena Friday at Foley Field. Kevin Quaranto had three hits for the Saints while Anthony Giansanti and Mike Allen finished with two each.
Verdin got the Bulldogs (7-7) on the scoreboard in the first with his fourth home run of the year. The Saints tied it up in the top of the third on a run-scoring single by Giansanti. The Bulldogs reclaimed the lead courtesy of Verdin's second home run in their half of the third and then extended the lead with a four-run outburst in the fourth. Verdin tied his career high with third RBI on the night on a bunt single to start the scoring, freshman first baseman Robert Shipman followed with an RBI-double and sophomore centerfielder Zach Cone (2-for-4, 3 RBI) capped the frame with a two-run single for a 6-1 lead.
The Saints cut it to 6-3 after a two-run single by Quaranto in the fifth, but that's as close as they would get. Georgia pushed a run across in the bottom of the inning on an RBI-single by Zach Taylor and then went up 9-3 in the sixth before rain halted play. Following a 58-minute delay, play resumed and neither team scored the remainder of the contest.
Bulldog sophomore Michael Palazzone (3-1) notched the win, allowing three runs on eight hits in five innings. Then, the Georgia bullpen provided four scoreless frames courtesy of sophomore Chase Hawkins, freshman Malcolm Clapsaddle and sophomore Cecil Tanner. Robert Tedesco took the loss for the Saints, surrendering seven runs on 11 hits before leaving in the fifth.
The series continues Saturday with first pitch slated for 3 p.m. The Bulldogs will start junior right-hander Justin Grimm (1-1, 5.52 ERA) while the Saints counter with freshman right-hander Justin Brantley (1-2, 6.48 ERA).
