Freshman Tyler Smith faced just six batters in the doubleheader, but he recorded a save and a win as Rider swept Siena 10-7 and 7-5 in Lawrenceville Saturday. Siena falls to 6-8 in MAAC play with the setbacks.
Game 1: Rider 10, Siena 7
In the first game junior Mike Thomas pitched eight innings, allowing two earned runs while striking out six for the win.
Siena got great production from the top four spots in its batting order. The 1-through-4 hitters went 8-for17 with seven runs scored and four RBI. Kevin Quaranto hit a grand slam in the ninth to pull the Saints within the final margin.
Rider (22-19, 9-8 MAAC) trailed 2-1 before scoring seven runs in the fourth inning on seven hits, the biggest hit of the inning a two-run double by junior John Ralston. Ralston, sophomore Brandon Cotten (Wiconisco, Pa./Williams Valley), Johnston and senior Eric Woodrow (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) each had two of Rider's 12 hits in the first game.
Anthony Giansanti and Mike Fish had two hits for the Sainst while sophomore Dan Paolini led all players with three hits.
Game 2: Rider 7, Siena 5
In the second game, junior A.J. Albee hit a two-run single in the sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie.
Siena jumped out to an early 4-1 lead and led 5-3 in the fifth before Rider tied the score at 5-5 when senior Nick Wojnowski hit an RBI triple and scored on a single by freshman Adam Wayman. Wojnowski and Wayman each had two of Rider's eight hits in the second game.
For Siena, Paolini ended with two hits and two RBI, closing out a five hit day. Rider freshman Mike Murphy started the second game and pitched five and two-thirds innings, striking out five. Kyle Sumple went the distance for Siena, allowing eight hits and five earned runs.
Rider has now defeated Siena in nine of the last 11 meetings. Siena holds a 23-22 advantage in the series that began in 1995.
The third game of the series will be Sunday at 12 noon.
