2010 MGOLF MAAC Championships Final Results
For a second straight season the Siena men's golf team came up just short of a conference championship, serving as runner-ups yet again to Loyola at the 2010 MAAC Championships in Celebration, Fla. The Greyhounds, which captured their third straight MAAC Championship, overcame a 10-stroke deficit on the final day to nip the Saints.
Last season, the Saints battled hard but trailed Loyola throughout, finishing five strokes off the pace. This time it appeared early on that Siena would return the favor as the Saints led following each of the first two rounds and by 10 shots entering Sunday's final round.
But Siena struggled to a final round team score of 309 while the Greyhounds had the low round of the weekend, firing a team score of 295 to win its 11th MAAC Championship. The Saints finished four shots off the pace, while Rider came in third place in finishing 10 strokes back.
Despite the defeat, the Saints finished in the top-2 at the MAAC Championships for a fifth straight season. Head Coach Tom Wronowski was honored for his and his team's efforts throughout the season as he was named the MAAC Coach of the Year.
Iona's Doug Hoppe shot +4 for the weekend, finishing with a total score of 220 to capture the individual title. Sophomore Justin Deitz capped a consistently strong weekend with a round of 74 on Sunday to finish tied for second overall, just four strokes back of Hoppe. Deitz was second amongst all competitors with nine birdies over the 54-hole tournament.
David Gushee and Don DeNyse III also recorded top-8 finishes as Siena was the only school to have three competitors finish that high. Gushee (227) placed seventh, while DeNyse (228) tied for eighth overall.
