LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. - After a rough start to their 2011 conference season with a pair of defeats last weekend, Siena Women's Soccer answered in a major way Friday. Ashleigh Barone and Caitlin Cahalan combined for 10 points as the defending MAAC Champs picked up their first league triumph thwarting Manhattan 5-0 at Siena Field.
It was a key victory for the Saints (6-4, 1-2) who were picked to repeat as MAAC Champions, but dropped a pair of heartbreaking road contests at Fairfield and Iona last weekend.
Needing to respond in a big way Siena wasted no time in putting away overmatched Manhattan (2-8-1, 0-3).
Cahalan scored her first of two goals in the 10th minute, opening the floodgates. After the Jaspers' defense failed to clear, Cahalan corralled possession and rocketed home a shot from 25 yards out.
Barone and freshman Katie Zambrano followed suit soon thereafter, giving Siena a commanding 3-0 lead at the half.
The second half proved to be more of the same for the Saints as Barone and Cahalan each added their second goals of the contest as Siena scored its most goals and posted its largest margin of victory since a 9-0 drubbing of Saint Peter's on Oct. 21, 2007.
It was a complete team effort by the Saints which ran their home win streak to 12 games, outscoring their opponents 30-9 over that time. Seven different players registered a point while 11 combined to take the team's 18 shots.
Lindsay Tegas joined Barone and Cahalan in posting a multiple point performance as she dished out a career-high three assists.
But it was Barone and Cahalan who stood out the most.
Barone's second goal was the 40th of her brilliant career and her five points now sit her just three shy of reaching 100 for her career. Cahalan meanwhile continued her hot stretch and has scored 13 of her 14 points this season in the team's last five games.
Defensively, Laura Ettinger recorded the shutout in goal without having to make a save as the Jaspers only mustered two shots in her vicinity. Kara Davis was called upon to make six saves for Manhattan.
The win continued a decade of dominance for the Saints over Manhattan as they ran their unbeaten streak to 10 (8-0-2) over their MAAC foe. The Saints have outscored the Jaspers 21-6 over that time.
The Saints look to build off their momentum Sunday when they host Saint Peter's in a 1 p.m. kickoff in Loudonville. Siena has won their last 12 meetings against the Peahens.
