The Siena Saints have been voted sixth in the 2011 MAAC preseason poll, one spot above where they finished in 2010. In addition, sophomore shortstop Shannon Jones has been named to the Preseason All-MAAC First Team.
In a narrow margin, Iona was tabbed the preseason favorite over Canisius, with the Gaels out-polling the Griffs by just two points (73-71). Those two were followed by Niagara (63 points), Manhattan (50), Fairfield (41), Siena (33), Marist (32), Rider (29), and Saint Peter's (9).
Meanwhile, Jones is coming off a stellar freshman campaign that saw her named to the MAAC Second Team. She led the Saints with a .344 batting average, and also contributed six home runs, 33 RBI, 22 runs scored, and 55 hits to Siena's offense. Jones was the only Saint named to the first team, one that is flanked by MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Teresa Healy of Niagara.
Siena starts their season on February 26th, with games against Delaware State and South Carolina State in Cary, North Carolina.
