Saints Drop Baseball Opener in Final At Bat

Feb. 17, 2012

Final Stats

Nick Schneeberger singled home the winning run with the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth as Tulane survived a scare from Siena Friday night in New Orleans in the season opener for both schools.

Junior Justin Brantley pitched seven strong innings for the Saints, allowing just three earned runs and striking out seven.

Siena used a three-run sixth to take a 4-2 lead, but the Green Wave rallied to tie the game with a pair of runs in the seventh, and scored the winning tally off reliever Neil Fryer in their final at bat.

John Ronney and Mike Fish each posted two hits an RBI and a run scored to pace Siena's offense. Fish doubled home the tying run in the sixth, and Ken Kirshner followed with a single up the middle that plated two.

Tulane struck for two runs in the first inning against Brantley. Brandon Bordreaux led off with double and scored on an RBI groundout, and Andrew Garner tripled home Schneeberger with the second run. Bordreaux, Schneeberger and Brennan Middleton each had two hits for the Green Wave.

Middleton singled to lead off the ninth, advanced to second on a one-out wild pitch, stole third and scored the winning run on Schneeberger's single following a pair of walks.

Rooney tripled home Siena's first run in the third, but the Saints could have done more damage. Vincent Citro reached with a one-out double, but was gunned down at third on Kyle Baldani's fielder's choice.

Brantley pitched five straight scoreless innings after allowing the two first inning runs before Tulane finally solved him again in the seventh.

The two teams will play a doubleheader Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. local time (2 p.m. ET)
