One day after coming very close to a massive upset of #19 Central Florida, Siena baseball fell victim to an offensive onslaught in Orlando. Keyed by a seven-run fifth inning, the Knights cruised to a 15-2 win over the Saints Sunday to complete the three-game sweep.
UCF (10-2) got off to a fast start, scoring four runs in the first off Siena freshman Rick Morales. The Knights also scored runs in the second and fourth, but runs in the fourth and fifth by the Green and Gold (1-10) kept the margin at four runs.
However, UCF put the game away in the fifth. A three-run homer by Darnell Sweeney and a two-run shot by D.J. Hicks helped give the Knights an insurmountable edge, and the margin was padded thanks to a bases-loaded wild pitch and an RBI single by Alex Friedrich.
Junior Mike Allen and freshman Ryan Metzler drove in Siena's runs, while Metzler and seniors William Cardona and Ted Trymbiski had two hits apiece. Meanwhile, senior C.J. Sohl pitched three efficient innings out of the bullpen, giving up just one run, and sophomore Jim Meindl threw a hitless inning of relief in the seventh.
Siena will next be in action on Saturday afternoon, when they kick off a three-game series at Lipscomb with a 12 p.m. doubleheader in Nashville.
