Army Offense Too Much for Siena Baseball

April 10, 2012

Box Score

Siena baseball dropped its third straight decision Tuesday at Siena Field, falling 14-1 to visiting Army in Loudonville, N.Y. The Black Knights scored all 14 runs in the first four innings, and banged out 16 hits on the afternoon.

Army (24-8) roughed up Siena starter Jake Werdesheim for two runs in the first inning, then put up five more in the second off the combination of Matt O'Kipney and Rick Morales. Siena (8-23) scored its lone run in the bottom of the second, when Ryan Metzler singled home Ted Trymbiski, but the Black Knights countered with four in the top of the third and three in the top of fourth to break the game open.

Freshman pitcher Matt Gage finally stopped the bleeding with five effective innings of relief. The first-year Saint did not allow an earned run and tallied five strikeouts in an impressive outing.

Metzler and Ken Kirshner each tallied multiple hits on the day for the Siena offense. The Saints totaled nine hits, and had chances to score runs, but stranded eight baserunners over nine innings.

Siena returns to action Wednesday afternoon with a 2 p.m. game at NYIT.
