Siena Drops Extra Inning Heartbreaker

April 18, 2012

Final Stats

Freshman Patrick McClure picked a good time for the first home run of his career. The Fairleigh Dickinson catcher launched a 3-2 C.J. Sohl offering over the left field wall to leadoff the 10th inning as the Knights made Siena pay for not scoring with the bases loaded in the 9th in a 9-8 non-league win in Loudonville Wednesday.

Mike Fish went 4-for-5 with two runs scored for Siena (13-25), which out-hit FDU (16-17-1)14-12. Four of the Saints last five games have been decided by a single run.

Ryan Kresky picked up his benchmark 200th hit with a two-out single in the seventh that ignited a four-run rally for the Knights.

Siena trailed 8-5 heading to the bottom of the seventh, but rallied to tie the game.

Ken Kirshner tripled off the right field wall to start the seventh, and scored on Ted Trymbiski's single to left to make it 8-6. In the eighth, John Rooney singled home a run, and Kirshner's sacrifice fly tied it. Trymbiski then lined out to center with two men on to end the threat.

Sohl kept the Knights at bay, and it looked like the Saints were going to win the game in the ninth.

Larry Balkwill led off with a single, and pinch runner Mike Williams took his place. Brian Fay then executed a perfect sacrifice bunt, Mike Fish followed with an infield single, and Vincent Citro walked to load the bases with just one out. FDU closer Eric Snyder shut the door there though, getting Kyle Baldani to pop up to second base, and Ryan Metzler to strike out swinging to force extras.

Snyder got the top of Siena's lineup in order in the 10th to preserve the victory.

Trymbiski and Metzler each had two hits and an RBI for Siena. Kyle Weeks and Shane Siebler had two hits each for FDU.

Siena returns to MAAC play this weekend, hosting Saint Peter's in a three-game series tentatively scheduled to be played Saturday and Sunday.
