Bell Rings In Victory for Saints

April 2, 2012

Final Stats

Tyler Bell's bases-loaded, walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the ninth gave Siena a 2-1 victory over visiting Binghamton in the rubber game of a three-game non-league set late Monday afternoon. It's the first series win in eight tries this season for the Saints.

Freshmen Matt Gage and Ed Lewicki pitched eight of the nine innings for the Saints, allowing just one run and seven hits. Jake Werdesheim started the game and pitched a 1-2-3 first in his initial appearance of the season.

Lewicki pitched the final four innings to earn his first college victory, lowering his ERA to 3.65 in 12.1 solid innings of work this season. Gage pitched four innings without allowing a run, scattering five hits and three walks.

The game was scoreless through six innings before Binghamton broke the ice on John Howell's single up the middle in the top of the seventh. The Saints quickly answered in the bottom of the frame as freshman Ryan Metzler singled to center with two outs, chasing home Ted Trymbiski with the equalizer.

Larry Balkwill worked a walk to lead off the ninth, and was sacrificed to second by Trymbiski. After Kyle Baldani was intentionally walked, Brian Fay flied out to center and Metzler was hit by a pitch to set the stage for Bell's heroics.

The sophomore laced a 2-2 letter-high fastball into the gap in left center to easily plate pinch-runner Dan Sullivan from third with the winning run.

Siena looks to ride the momentum of Monday's win into its MAAC series with Iona Friday and Saturday here in Loudonville. The series begins with a doubleheader Friday at noon and concludes Saturday with a single game at noon.
