Joe Jackson led four Tigers in double figures with 18 points and #21 Memphis out-scored Siena 35-19 over the final 16:20 to post an 87-60 victory in the quarterfinals of the Old Spice Classic Thursday night. Brett Bisping had his first career double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds in the loss.
Siena moves on to face Saint Joseph's, which lost to LSU 82-65, Friday night at 8 p.m. in a game that will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
"We battled, we did some good things," Siena coach Jimmy Patsos said. "I asked us to be tough on the ball and not turn it over and we turned it over too much."
The Saints turned it over 20 times, leading to 24 Memphis points.
Memphis used a 15-3 run midway through the first half to build a 29-15 lead, and the Tigers led by double figures the rest of the way. Siena got within 52-41 at the 16:40 mark of the second half after a Lavon Long layup ended a 9-2 spurt that forced the Tigers to call timeout.
Shaq Goodwin finished with 17 points and 10 rebounds for Memphis, and was the difference in the game early. Goodwin made his first six field goals, including three dunks and had 13 points at the break. With Goodwin controlling the paint, Michael Dixon Jr. went 4-4 from three-point land on his way to 16 points.
Evan Hymes joined Bisping in double figures with 10 points for the Saints. Behind Bisping and Hymes, Siena's bench accounted for 37 points. Ryan Oliver had a career-high nine points and Michael Wolfe had a career-best seven.
Siena had 29 offensive rebounds (nine by Bisping) and scored 28 of its 60 points on second chances, but the Saints shot 34% from the field and got to the free throw line just 10 times.
"I expect us to compete harder than that," Patsos said. "We could have competed harder for 40 minutes. We did in spurts."
