Siena got the tying run to third with one-out in the ninth, but Kevin McCarty wiggled out of trouble as he did all day, preserving Marist's 3-2 win in the Saints' home opener Thursday. The teams will complete the MAAC series with a doubleheader Saturday at noon.

McCarty went the distance for Marist (11-8, 4-0), tossing 132 pitchers and allowing just two runs on eight hits.

Matt Gage suffered another hard-luck league loss for Siena (6-17, 2-2), working seven innings and allowing just two runs.

Both teams had plenty of chances to score, but the timely hit was hard to find.

Brian Fay singled and Mike Allen reached on a fielding error to put men on first and second with one out in the ninth. Freshman Nick Wolyniec followed with a great at bat, fouling off several pitches before lining a base hit to right centerfield that chased home pinch runner Mike Williams and sent Allen to third with the tying run.

Pinch hitter Dave Hoffman followed with a hard grounder to third base, Allen broke on contact, but third baseman Nick McQuail sprawled to his left to make the play and fired home to cut off the tying run. Vincent Citro hit a sharp one-hopper to second to end the game.

Citro and Wolyniec each had two hits for Siena. Zach Shank and McQuail each collected two hits for Marist.

Mike Orefice drove in Marist's first run in the first, and their second in the fifth. The Red Foxes got a key insurance run in the top of the ninth on Shank's two-out double.

Citro singled home Siena's first run in the fourth, but the Saints left the bases loaded in the fifth.

Siena's defense turned three double plays, including a key inning-ending twin-killer in the eighth.
