Final Stats

Freshman Bryan Goossens carried a shutout into the seventh, and the Siena baseball team pounded out 13 hits in an 8-4 non-league win over UMass Monday in Loudonville.

Goossens got credited with his first collegiate win and he's posted a sub-3.0 ERA in over 27 innings of work this season.

Larry Balkwill, Brian Fay and Mike Allen each collected three hits for the Saints. Balkwill drove in three runs, Fay and Dave Hoffman each had two RBI. John Rooney and Andres Ortiz added two hits for Siena (8-18).

Siena jumped out to a quick 3-0 in the first on RBI singled from Balkwill, Fay and Allen. They pushed the lead to 6-0 with single runs in the third, fifth and sixth.

Goossens scattered six hits through the first six innings and did not allow a run. He tired in the seventh, and UMass (3-14) took advantage, scoring three times on four hits.

Carlos Cabrera pitched two innings of hitless relief, but he walked three men and allowed one run. Neil Fryer got the final out of the game with the tying run on deck to pick up his third save.

The two teams combined for 23 hits, the first 22 were singles. Fay's opposite field double in the eighth was the only extra base hit in the game. Siena and UMass each left 11 men on base.

The Saints are scheduled to return to action at Siena Field Wednesday at 2 p.m. with a doubleheader against Brown.
