Siena Cross Country put a bow on a successful fall season at the ECAC/IC4A Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx. In a 2014 season where the Saints' record book has been nearly completed re-written, men's senior captain Nick Grudev and women's junior captain Christie MacFarlane broke program records on the Van Cortlandt Park Course.
"It's hard to compare how we have done year to year with this meet because the field changes so much," said head coach John Kenworthy. "But having both teams move up in the standings is always a good sign."
The men finished fifth overall in the 16-team University Division 5-mile race. Fordham won the event, with four MAAC schools - Marist, Monmouth, Fairfield and the Saints - rounding out the top-five in the 106th running of the IC4A Men's Cross Country Championships.
In his final collegiate race, Grudev went out with a bang. He finished 10th overall in the 148-runner field, completing the course in a time of 26:14.8. Grudev broke former teammate Ryan Egan's 2012 program record at Van Cortland Park's 5-mile course by more than 10 seconds.
"To have Nick finish with a school record in his final race is obviously a testament to the impact that he's had over his four years and it was a great way to end his career," added Kenworthy.
Junior captain Nick Miller (19th - 26:30.3) and sophomore Nick Cornine (27th - 26:47.0) also had strong efforts in posting three of the Saints' 10 fastest-ever times on the Van Cortlandt Park 5-mile course.
The women finished 12th overall in the 18-team ECAC Championship Women's University Division 5K run.
MacFarlane broke her own program record on the Van Cortland Park 5K course with a time of 18:51.7 to finish 18th overall. She now holds the Saints' three fastest-ever times on the course.
"Christie ran a little faster than last year," noted Kenworthy. "To break another record is a testament to her. That type of performance helps end the year on a high note."
Sophomore Kelly Pasko also posted a top-50 finish, placing 44th overall with a time of 19:23.3 in the 178-runner field.
Siena made significant strides this fall in Kenworthy's second season as he looks to continue to build the program. The Saints broke both men's and women's individual program records at nearly every distance, while both teams each made jumps in the standings.
"Looking forward, we are hoping to take another big jump next year like we did this year and keep the momentum rolling," reflected Kenworthy. "Going into my third year, the student athletes know what to expect now from me, from practice and from themselves. I think that we have the pieces to keep moving up in the MAAC."
