Men's tennis senior Ryan Schmitz and women's tennis freshman Ali Garrity were each named MAAC Tennis Players of the Week Wednesday.
Schmitz (Schenectady, N.Y./Scotia-Glenville) started the spring season with impressive efforts at the top of Siena's singles and double rotation in a tough 4-3 loss at Sacred Heart University. The senior teamed with Peter Collins for an exciting 6-5 (7-5) win at No. 1 doubles, helping the Saints secure the doubles point with a 2-1 win. Schmitz then took down Sacred Heart's top player Brian Power 6-2 and 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Power was coming off an impressive three-set win over Boston University's top player Chanon Varapongsittikul the previous week. Schmitz was recently named Siena's January Student Athlete of the Month.
Garrity (Medina, Ohio/Medina) picked up one of the team's most impressive wins of the season when she knocked off Della Taylor of Army in a three-set thriller at No. 2 singles Sunday at West Point. Taylor entered the match with an 11-5 record and a 4-1 mark in dual match play and took the first set 6-3, but Garrity rallied to claim a 7-5 win in the second set and then edged free for a 10-7 win in the super tiebreaker. On Saturday, Garrity teamed with classmate
