Baseball Still Winless After Dropping Two at Radford

March 1, 2014

Final Stats

Radford used an eight-run sixth in a 10-4 win in the opener and scored six times in the fifth on their way to a 9-8 extra-inning victory in the nightcap as snake-bitten Siena fell to 0-8 on the season Saturday in Virginia. The Saints scored six runs in the top of the seventh in the nightcap to force extra innings before losing in the eighth.

Game One

The scores was tied 2-2 in the sixth when Radford took advantage of two Siena errors to break the game wide open.

Hunter Higgerson's two-run home run highlighted the rally. Junior Josh Gardiner and senior Alexander Lee added run-scoring singles that started the rally.

Siena starter Matt Gage pitched into the sixth and was only charged with two earned runs on the day.

The Saints strung together four hits in the fourth and evened the game on a two-out RBI single by Patrick Ortland. Ortland finished 2-for-3 with two RBI for the Saints. Brett Connors had a pinch-hit two run single in the ninth to account for the Saints' other two runs.

Alexander Lee was 3-for-5 with a double, RBI and two runs scored for Radford. Higgerson and Josh Reavis each went 2-for-5.

Dylan Nelson worked eight innings, allowing just five hits and two runs to get the win for Radford. Junior Ed Lewicki had a strong relief effort, going 2.2 scoreless innings for the Saints.

Game Two

A six-run fifth afforded Radford an 8-2 lead, but Siena posted a six spot in the top of the seventh to force extra innings in the night cap. The momentum was short lived for the Saints as Lee collected a one-out walk-off double to the centerfield fence for the 9-8 victory in a scheduled seven-inning game.

Lee finished 2-for-5 with a double and two RBI. Junior Aaron Scoville, who scored the winning run, went 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Patrick Marshall homered twice for the Highlanders, while Higgerson and Zach Woolcock had two hits apiece.

Dan Swain tied the game with a dramatic three-run double to centerfield with two outs in Siena's final at bat. Carlos Tapia came off the bench to knock in two.

After Marshall's homer gave the Highlanders a 1-0 lead in the second inning, Siena scored twice in the third, taking the lead on Justin Esquerra's RBI single.

Marshall's second long ball of the day extended Radford's lead to 5-2 in the fifth and an RBI single by sophomore Jordan Taylor, sac fly by sophomore Chris Coia and a bases load hit by pitch pushed the advantage to 8-2.

Starter Michael Boyle was cruising along retiring nine consecutive Saints between the fourth and sixth innings, but the Saints broke through in the seventh to force extras. The series closes out tomorrow at 12:00 p.m.
