Siena shook off a tough 1-0 loss in Monday's opener to defeat Marist 8-4 in the rubber-game of a three-game MAAC series that was completed at Fishkill's Dutchess Stadium. The Saints got two very strong starting pitching performances from junior Ed Lewicki and sophomore Bryan Goossens.

Game One

Three Marist (7-16, 1-5) pitchers combined for a four-hit shutout, spoiling a complete-game five-hitter by Lewicki.

Nick McQuail's two-out RBI single in the sixth provided the only run in the seven-inning contest. Siena (5-18, 5-1) had a runner on third with one out in third, two men on with one-out in the fifth, and runners on the corners with one out in the sixth, but failed to score each time. The key play came in the sixth when John Rooney was gunned out at home on a double steal attempt.

Lewicki retired the first two men he faced in the sixth, before giving up a single, a walk and McQuail's decisive hit.

Scott Boches started and worked into the fifth for Marist, allowing just two hits and three walks. Ryan Thomas got the win in relief, working the final 1.2 innings and allowing just one hit while striking out two.

Andres Ortiz had two hits for Siena, setting the stage for a monster day at the plate.

Game Two

Goossens carried a three-hit shutout into the eighth and the Siena offense gave him seven runs by that time, allowing for a late Marist rally.

Ortiz went 3-for-5 with two RBI, including an RBI single in the Saints' five-run sixth. Dave Hoffmann finished off a fine series at the plate with two hits and three RBI.

After three scoreless frames, Siena struck for single runs in the fourth and fifth before breaking through in the sixth.

Marist scored all four of its runs in the eighth, chasing Goossens and reliever Matt Quintana before Kyano Cummings came on to close the door and record the final five outs.

Ben Moller went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI for Marist which has lost five of its six MAAC games.

The Saints return to action with a non-league doubleheader at Brown Wednesday at 2 p.m.
