Justin Esquerra's two-out RBI double in the top of the ninth chased home Vincent Citro with the game-winning run in Siena's 3-2 non-league triumph at UMass Tuesday. All-time saves king Neil Fryer (Greenwich, N.Y.) worked around two walks in the ninth to pick up his 23rd career save.
Siena (20-29) used seven different pitchers and nearly all were effective. UMass (13-30) managed just four hits and a single earned run. Freshman Chris Amorosi (1-0) picked up his first career win in relief, working 1.2 scoreless innings.
Esquerra, John Rooney and Dave Hoffmann each had two of Siena's eight hits.
The game was scoreless entering the sixth when both teams pushed a run across. Rooney singled, stole second and scored Siena's first run on Hoffmann's sacrifice fly. John Jennings' fielder's choice ground out scored UMass' initial run.
Citro walked with one out in the seventh and scored on a fielding error to put the Saints back up 2-1, but the Minutemen tied the game on Kyle Adie's RBI hit in the bottom of the frame.
Citro again worked a one-out walk to set up the winning rally in the ninth. He stole second, and after Mike Allen flied out, Esquerra delivered the key hit in the game - an RBI double down the left field line.
Fryer walked two of the first three men he faced in the bottom of the ninth, but settled down to get the final two outs on a flyball to center and a pop-out to first base.
Siena returns home for their final regular-season series of the season Thursday and Friday when they host Quinnipiac. The Saints and Bobcats will play a doubleheader at noon Thursday and a single game Friday at noon on Senior Day.
