Javion Ogunyemi scored a career-high 24 points, including the go-ahead layup with 2.3 seconds left in overtime to lift Siena to an exhilarating 83-81 victory at Bucknell Tuesday night. The Saints end their season-opening five game road trip with an encouraging 3-2 record.
Bucknell had a chance to tie the game, but Chris Hass misfired on an off-balance jumper after a perfectly executed inbounds play as the final buzzer sounded.
"(Bucknell) is a team you want to play at the Mid-Major level," Jimmy Patsos said. "They're a legit Mid-Major power. To come in here and win this game is great."
Siena's do-it-all point guard Marquis Wright finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, nine assists and four steals. Wright blew past his defender on the winning play, and calmly found Ogunyemi alone underneath after his man hedged to help.
Brett Bisping finished with 16 points and a career-high 16 rebounds in the win. The Saints pounded Bucknell 49-26 on the glass and made 6-7 field goals after falling behind early in the overtime session
"The rebounding was unbelievable," Patsos said. "I'm really proud of the kids."
Bucknell got 20 points from Zach Thomas and 18 from Hass, though he made just 4-12 field goals.
Siena snapped a 24-game losing streak when allowing 80 points or more, and won its third straight game after season-opening losses at Duke and Wisconsin.
The victory could have come sooner had Siena made its free throws. The Saints shot just 11-23 from the line for the game, and Bisping made just 1-2 with nine seconds left in regulation to tie the game at 67. Ryan Frazier's rushed jumper as the buzzer sounded was off the mark, forcing overtime.
Siena never trailed in the first half, but led just 37-36 at the break after making just 2-9 threes and 3-9 free throws.
Bucknell led for just three minutes and 43 seconds of the 45 minutes played, but the game was tied for seven minutes and 25 seconds.
Nana Foulland scored Bucknell's first five points of overtime, giving the Bison their biggest lead of the game, 72-69, with 3:59 left. But Siena dug deep and executed its offense patiently down the stretch to pull out the gutty win.
They'll try for their fourth straight win Saturday at noon when Patsos' former team Loyola comes to Times Union Center for the Saints' home-opener.
