The Albany Cup took a detour through Troy on its way back to Loudonville Saturday night. Javion Ogunyemi scored 10 of his 13 points in the final 4:37, including four thunderous jams, as Siena pulled away from crosstown rival UAlbany down the stretch for a 78-70 win in front of 10,790 fans at Times Union Center.
Ogunyemi also had four of Siena's 13 blocks, just one off a school team record set nearly 28 years ago.
Lavon Long led five Saints in double figures with 19 points. Brett Bisping had a monster double-double with 14 points and 15 rebounds, and Nico Clareth flashed brilliance with 14 points in 25 spirited minutes.
It all added up to another quality non-league win for Siena, which had the Times Union Center rocking at a level not seen in the last five years.
"That was a good game," Siena coach Jimmy Patsos said. "It was an exciting game with threes and drives. It was a big win, but if we lost I would have said it was a great game too."
Peter Hooley led all players with 20 points for UAlbany. The Great Danes had their three-game win streak in the rivalry snapped. Siena has won 10 of the 15 meetings since the series was renewed at the Division I level in 2001.
Evan Singletary's layup with 8:04 left gave the Great Danes their last lead, 55-54, with 8:04 left. Siena used a 10-2 run after the under-eight media timeout, taking command for good after Ogunyemi's ferocious two-handed flush with 3:56 to play.
He was just getting started.
After two UAlbany free throws, Ogunyemi jammed on a fast break. Then Hooley scored inside, and Ogunyemi brought the arena to its feet by finishing an alley-oop from Marquis Wright. The exclamation point was a breakaway slam in the final minute that sent the Siena bench into delirium.
The Saints were great late, and set the tone early, jumping out to a 12-3 lead as UAlbany missed its first seven shots. The Danes quickly got back in the game, and took their first lead, 25-23, on a pair of Jamir Andrews' free throws.
The Saints regrouped behind Long, responding with a 10-2 run and taking a 34-32 lead to the lockerroom. Long had 15 of his 19 points in the first half, and was at times unstoppable.
"Lavon is a great player," Patsos said. "When he's competing, there's nobody better."
Siena shot 53% from the field and limited UAlbany to 37%. The Saints improved to 4-0 at home for the first time since 2009-10, and have nine days to enjoy the victory before returning to Times Union Center to face St. Bonaventure with the Franciscan Cup at stake.
Siena fans can savor the victory for much longer.
"It's very important," Wright told the Times Union. "I feel like we wanted to do it for ourselves and also for the community and our fans."
