Marquis Wright scored 11 of his game-high 20 points in the final 5:25 to lead Siena past sister school St. Bonaventure in a riveting revival of the Franciscan Cup Tuesday night in Albany. Brett Bisping's took a key charge, then scored with 40 seconds left to give Siena the lead for good. Dion Wright's three-point try to tie the game in the closing seconds was off the mark.
"This was for our kids," Siena coach Jimmy Patsos said. "I thought they played hard and won it with their defense. They're finding ways to win."
Siena has won eight of 10 after season-opening losses at Duke and Wisconsin.
The Saints have won three straight over St. Bonaventure by nearly the exact same score. They toppled the Bonnies 73-70 in Olean last year, and 72-70 for Patsos' first win in 2013.
"I feel bad in a way beating them by a combined eight points," Patsos said. "(St. Bonaventure coach) Mark (Schmidt) is a friend of mine. They've been great games, but they would have been great games if we lost too."
It's the first time Siena has won the Albany Cup and Franciscan Cup in the same season, capturing both in a 10-day span that bookmarked final exams. The Bonnies won the first three meetings for the Franciscan Cup from 2010-12.
St. Bonaventure led 66-63 after Dion Wright's layup with 3:05 left, but Marquis Wright tied the game for the 10th time (all in the second half) with a huge three on the Saints' next trip. He made 4-6 threes, upping his season percentage to 55% (23-42). He entered the year 20-83 (24%) from distance for his career.
Dion Wright's miss capped off a wild finish. Lavon Long stole the ball and was fouled on a breakaway with 22 seconds left. He made one of two free throws to push Siena's lead to 71-68. Jayeln Adams was fouled on the drive and cut the lead to 71-70 with a pair of free throws on the Bonnies next trip. Ryan Oliver missed two free throws for Siena giving St. Bonaventure the ball with a chance to win. Adams drove hard to his right, but turned the ball over, and Wright sunk a pair of free throws with eight seconds on the clock.
Javion Ogunyemi followed his monster effort in the UAlbany win with his second double-double of the season, finishing with 15 points, 10 rebounds and three blocks. The Saints out-rebounded the Bonnies 38-27, the fourth time this year they've had a double-digit advantage on the glass.
Siena placed five players in double figures for the seventh time. Long, Bisping and Nico Clareth all had 11 points.
The Saints led for the entire first half after Bisping scored on the first possession of the game. Marcus Posley's three-pointer gave St. Bonaventure its first lead, 35-34, on the first possession of the second half. The lead changed hand eight times to go along with the 10 ties in the final 20 minutes.
"This is a fun team," Patsos said. "I hope people will continue to come out to support us."
