UConn broke open a close game with seven runs in the sixth and coasted home to a 12-4 win over Siena Saturday in Port St. Lucie, Fla. Dan Swain was 2-for-5 with an RBI, and Dave Hoffmann homered for the Saints.
Swain singled to start the game and came around to score on Brian Fay's sacrifice fly. UConn answered with two runs in its first at bat on a two-run single off the bat of Max McDowell.
Hoffmann led off the fourth with a game-tying home run to left, but UConn took the lead back in the bottom of the frame and broke it wide open with the seven-run sixth. The Huskies pounded out six hits in the decisive frame.
Siena scored its final two runs in the ninth on RBI hits by Swain and Patrick Ortland.
Vinny Siena had three hits and a pair of runs scored for the Huskies, and Joe Derouche-Duffin drove in three runs. McDowell and Jack Sundberg added two hits each for UConn.
Carson Cross started and tossed seven innings allowing just five hits and two runs to pick up the win. Siena used four different pitchers, and all four allowed at least one run.
The two teams will play the middle game of their three-game series Sunday at 1 p.m.
