Baseball Settles for Split at Saint Peter's

April 25, 2015

Final Stats

Siena used a seven run third to grab command in a 10-4 game one victory, but Saint Peter's battled back to take the second game 4-1, setting up a rubber game Sunday at 12 p.m. in Jersey City.

Game 1 - Siena 10, Saint Peter's 4

Siena sent 12 men to the plate in the third inning and scored seven times to put the game away early in its sixth straight MAAC win.

Tyler Martis had two of his three hits in the third, leading off the frame with a single and then driving home the Saints' final two runs of the inning with a two-out single in his second trip to the plate.

After Martis' single to start the inning, Dan Swain struck out and then Peacocks' starter Kevin Soriano lost command. He walked Jordan Bishop before Justin Esquerra singled, and then he walked Brian Fay, hit Dave Hoffmann, walked Joe Drpich and hit Alex Tuccio. All four missteps forced home a run, and ultimately ended Soriano's day.

Siena scored its final three runs of the game in the fifth. Brian Fay delivered the big blow - a two-run double that scored Bishop and Swain and put the game on ice.

Meanwhile, Ed Lewicki battled through 5.1 innings to earn the win. Matt Quintana was simply dominant in relief, tossing 3.2 hitless innings with eight consecutive strikeouts for his fourth save.

Martis had three of the Saints' 12 hits. Swain and Hoffmann each had two.

Game 2 - Saint Peter's 4, Siena 1

Saint Peter's starter John Leiter threw a complete-game five hitter and allowed just one run to pick up his second win of the season, and Rob Moore went deep twice to account for half of the Peacocks' offense.

Moore and Chris Hugg hit back-to-back home runs in the first to stake the Peacocks to a 2-0 lead. That proved to be all the offense they would need.

Moore went deep again in his second trip to the plate in the third, making it 3-0. That's where things stood until the sixth when Brian Fay singled home the Saints' only run of the game. The Peacocks got that run back in the bottom of the sixth, and Leiter struck out the side in the seventh to nail down the win. He finished with 10 strikeouts.

Siena got 2.2 strong innings of relief from freshman Ryan Bellomo. Bellomo allowed no hits, struck out five and gave up an unearned run.

Southpaw Kyano Cummings will get the ball Sunday for the Saints. Cummings leads the team with six saves.
