Siena Baseball kicks off its 2016 season Friday when the Saints head to the Sunshine State for the start of a three-game weekend series at American Athletic Conference foe Central Florida. Senior captain Bryan Goossens gets the Opening Day start for the Saints, with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 p.m. from Jay Bergman Field in Orlando.
"We're excited to get the season rolling and with much anticipation," said veteran head coach Tony Rossi. "We have a good mix of young and old and I'm extremely interested to see how things will shake out at the beginning of the season. Our goal as always is to get playing time for our guys to see where we are and what they will need to do to bring it together as a team."
The 2016 season marks Rossi's 47th leading the Siena Baseball program. The longest tenured active head coach at the same institution in any Division I sport, Rossi is the winningest coach in school history in any sport and winningest active coach in the MAAC having amassed 824 career wins.
The Saints enter the 2016 season with high expectations as the program looks to build off three consecutive 20-win seasons and MAAC Championship Series appearances, which culminated in a title in 2014. Siena was recently predicted to finish third of 11 teams (including one first-place vote) according to the MAAC Preseason Coaches' Poll, with junior centerfielder Dan Swain and sophomore designated hitter Joe Drpich named Preseason All-MAAC selections.
Swain (2014) and Drpich (2015) were each named MAAC Rookie of the Year, and figure to solidify the middle of Siena's lineup. Swain has 112 hits in his first two seasons with the program, and Drpich hit .301 with a MAAC-best nine home runs as a rookie last year en route to becoming just the fourth Siena player in program history to earn recognition on Collegiate Baseball's Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American Team.
The Saints' rotation is anchored by Goossens, and features talented southpaws Amorosi and Cummings. Slated to start the second game of this weekend's series, the versatile Cummings has been named to the initial Watch List for the 12th Annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball. He's also ranked 77th on Perfect Game's list of the top-100 college seniors.
Siena is scheduled to play its first 17 games away from home this season, while visiting five different states. The Saints conclude their swing through Florida with a pair of games at Stetson Tuesday and Wednesday, before making stops in South Carolina, Virginia, Kentucky and Indiana prior to returning to the Capital Region in late March.
Siena's home opener is scheduled for Mar. 25 when the Saints open a three-game set against Niagara to begin MAAC play. Siena is set to play 18 games at new-look Siena Field this spring, which underwent a major facelift following the end of last season.
Siena Field received a half million dollars worth of upgrades, which were made possible through generous private donations. Improvements to the field included a new seating system with stadium chair back and bleacher seating, a new press box with filming platform, new backstop (netting system), decorative entryway, outfield irrigation system to complement the existing infield system, dugout repairs and safety netting, and enhanced storage space.
Siena is opening its season at Central Florida for the fourth year in a row and fifth time in the past six seasons. The perennial regional power Knights have captured 45 of the 49 all-time meetings between the programs, including seven straight.
UCF posted a 31-27 overall record last season including a 10-14 mark in the AAC. The Knights return just two regulars from last year's lineup and welcome 15 newcomers.
