Central Connecticut recorded a pair of three-run innings early to defeat Siena Baseball 6-5 in non-conference action in New Britain, Conn. The Saints pushed across four runs to rally within a score in the fifth, but were unable to get any closer.
Sophomore second baseman Jordan Bishop continued his torrid stretch and raised his batting average to a team-high .341 with a three-run home run during Siena's (12-21) four-run fifth. Dan Lowndes drove home the other run in the inning, singling home Fred Smart.
CCSU (15-20) raced out to an early 6-1 lead through three innings. The Blue Devils sent eight men to the dish in plating three runs in the home half of the first, and added three more in the third to take a commanding lead.
Siena scored its early run in the second. Alex Tuccio's fielder's choice with a pair of runners aboard chased home Smart from third with the Saints' first run. Smart finished 2-3 on the afternoon with a pair of runs scored.
Three Siena relievers combined to allow just two hits in pitching the final five shutout innings, but three Blue Devils relievers did likewise over the last four innings to secure the victory.
The Saints return to the Capital Region Wednesday for their lone home contest during a nine-game stretch. Siena welcomes Holy Cross to Siena Field for a 3 p.m. first pitch.
