LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- Siena Baseball is headed back to the MAAC Tournament. The Saints punched their ticket in dramatic fashion, walking off with a 14-inning 9-8 triumph over rival Marist in the first game of a series opening doubleheader at Siena Field. Siena also took the nightcap 6-3 to clinch their seventh straight conference series victory.
The Saints (22-30, 15-8) have secured a MAAC Tournament berth for the fourth year in a row and fifth time in the past six seasons. Siena would clinch a share of the MAAC Regular Season Championship with a win in the series finale Friday, coupled with a Fairfield loss to Quinnipiac. The top-two seeds receive coveted first round byes in the MAAC Tournament and, with their doubleheader sweep, the Saints are assured to be seeded anywhere from 2-4.
Despite being swept, Marist (24-24, 15-8) joined Siena in clinching a postseason bid on a day which saw the final fourth available berths secured for the six-team MAAC Tournament. The Saints and Red Foxes will be joined by Fairfield, Monmouth, Canisius and Manhattan in the MAAC Tournament which is set to take place next Wednesday through Saturday at Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, N.Y.
Game One: Siena 9, Marist 8 (14)
Freshman Brian Kelly proved to be the hero, singling home classmate Jordan Folgers from third with one out in the bottom of the 14th inning as Siena walked off with the win and walked into the MAAC Tournament.
The Saints jumped out to a 5-1 lead through three innings and harbored a 7-4 advantage through six. But in the seventh, Marist plated four runs highlighted by a three-run home run by reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week Frankie Gregoire to claim an 8-7 lead. Siena would knot the score on an RBI groundout by Jordan Bishop in the home half of the eighth as the game would end up going to extra innings.
The Saints pounded out 17 hits en route to improving to a perfect 4-0 in extra-inning affairs. Folgers, Phil Madonna and Fred Smart each recorded three hits and Smart drove in four runs while Folgers scored three times including the game-winner.
Kyano Cummings came on to toss the final eight innings of relief out of the Siena bullpen, scattering eight hits and two runs while walking four and striking out six to earn his staff-leading sixth victory.
Game Two: Siena 6, Marist 3 (7)
Bryan Goossens pitched his second complete game of the season and both Madonna and Bishop delivered key two-run hits to lead the Saints to the series victory. Goossens allowed just five hits and three runs in going the distance.
Madonna put Siena in front for good early, tallying the go-ahead two-run double in the second inning and Bishop tacked on a pair of key insurance runs with his single in the fourth. Madonna finished with a pair of hits and three RBI, while Bishop extended his hitting streak to 16 straight.
Anthony Lazar contributed a pair of hits in the nightcap to round out a six-hit afternoon for the Red Foxes which clinched a MAAC Tournament berth for the second straight season. Gregoire reached base safely eight times in the doubleheader on the strength of four hits and drove in five runs for Marist which will be seeded either fifth or sixth.
The Saints will look to complete their first three-game series sweep of the season and head into the MAAC Tournament on a high note, when the teams meet in the series finale Friday at noon.
