Men Picked First, Women Fourth in MAAC Golf Preseason Poll

LOUDONVILLE, NY - The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) announced that Siena Men’s Golf was predicted to finish first while the women’s program was picked to finish fourth in the preseason coaches’ poll.

The men were picked as the 2017 MAAC Preseason favorite after receiving seven first place votes for a total of 78 points. Manhattan was picked second with one first place vote and 68 points. Siena and the Jaspers were tied after three rounds of golf at the 2016 MAAC Championship with a score of 890. The Saints won the one-hole playoff two strokes ahead of Manhattan to take the 2016 MAAC Championship.

Fairfield (54), Iona (53) and Rider (39) rounded out the top-five in the poll for the men. Saint Peter’s who was picked sixth, received one first place with 37 points. Monmouth (31), Niagara (27) and Canisius (18) rounded out the poll.

The men finished the fall season with two third place finishes. Siena is set to begin their spring season on Feb. 27 at the Wexford Plantation Invitational at Hilton Head, South Carolina.

The women were picked to finish fourth behind preseason favorites, UAlbany and Quinnipiac. The Great Danes earned five first place votes while the Bobcats picked up three. Monmouth rounded out the top-three with 60 points before Siena with 52.

The University of Dayton (51) and Hartford (35) came in fifth and sixth. They were directly followed by Niagara (29), Fairfield (27) and La Salle (9) who rounded out the poll. This is La Salle’s first season competing in the MAAC and its first year of existence as a program.

The Siena women have won 13 MAAC Championships and made two NCAA appearances. The program participated in five meets during the fall, finishing runners-up at the Bucknell Invite. The women will begin their spring season on Mar. 5 at the Lonnie Barton Invitational in Daytona, Florida.
