Pittsburgh scored eight unanswered runs highlighted by a tie-breaking, six-run seventh to take the series opener from Siena Baseball 8-2 at historic Dodgertown in Vero Beach, Florida. Freshman shortstop Rich Gilbride recorded his first collegiate multi-hit game, going 2-for-3 with a run scored in the loss.

Siena (0-6) stuck first blood in the top of the third inning on an RBI groundout by junior first baseman Joe Drpich, and an RBI single by sophomore third baseman Brian Kelly.

Pitt (4-1) scored single runs in the third and sixth innings, as the teams would hit the stretch knotted at 2-2. But in the decisive seventh, the Panthers would bat around sending 11 men to the plate. David Yanni delivered the key blow with a two-run double, which was one of only two hits in the inning as Siena was undone by four walks, a hit batsman, and an error in the frame.

Sophomore southpaw Tommy Miller tossed 5.2 innings, scattering six hits and two runs in a solid bounce back start vs. an ACC foe for the Saints. RJ Freure recorded three scoreless innings to earn the win in relief for the Panthers.

The teams continue their three-game weekend series Saturday at 1 p.m.
