Baseball Wins Ninth Consecutive MAAC Series

April 9, 2017

Box Score

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. -- Monmouth plated four runs in the ninth and had runners on the corners with one out, but freshman closer Danny Hobbs induced a game-ending double play as Siena Baseball escaped with a 6-5 win in the rubber game of the series at Siena Field. Junior first baseman Joe Drpich had three hits and a pair of RBI for the Saints which captured their ninth consecutive conference series dating back to last season.

Siena (11-14-1, 4-2) built a 6-1 lead through eight innings, thanks to timely hitting and solid pitching.

The Saints opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the third, and doubled their advantage in the fifth on run-scoring hits from Drpich and freshman designated hitter Nico Ramos. Siena added what would prove to be a pair of crucial insurance runs in their final at-bat in the eighth, on a two-run double by freshman rightfielder Zach Durfee.

Meanwhile the Saints received a solid effort on the mound by Chris Amorosi who went the first five-plus innings. The senior captain allowed just one run and struck out four to earn his first win of 2017.

However, Monmouth (9-18, 5-4) would not go quietly in the ninth. Dan Shea delivered an opposite field three-run home run, and ultimately the first six Hawks to hit in the inning all reached base safely. Monmouth's first out of the frame rallied the Hawks within just one, while putting runners on the corners. But Hobbs induced Aidan Favia to ground into the game-ending double play to secure his third save of the season.

Ramos, senior centerfielder Dan Swain and sophomore third baseman Brian Kelly each recorded a pair of hits in joining Drpich with multi-hit efforts. Drpich finished the series 5-for-9 with a home run and five RBI, and has now reached base safely in 16 straight.

Shaine Hughes tallied his third straight three-hit performance of the series for Monmouth which has suffered each of its four MAAC defeats by a single run.

Siena continues its season long nine-game homestand Tuesday, when the Saints host Fordham in non-conference action at 4 p.m.
