Stephen Furman delivered the go-ahead two-run single in the bottom of the sixth inning as Iona rallied past Siena Baseball 4-2 in the series finale at City Park. Despite the defeat, the Saints still took the MAAC opening series thanks to 15-2 and 3-2 victories Sunday.
Senior captain Phil Madonna extended his hitting streak to 13 games with a two-hit effort, while classmate Jordan Bishop added a matching 2-4 batting line as the duo accounted for four of the five Siena (2-18, 2-1) hits.
Dion Austrie scored a pair of key runs for Iona (5-15, 1-2), which snapped an eight-game losing streak. Mario Ferraioli tossed 3.1 shutout innings to earn the win in relief for the Gaels, which won for the just the second time in the past nine meetings between the programs in New Rochelle.
Siena led 2-1 heading into the home half of the sixth following a first inning sacrifice fly off the bat of senior Joe Drpich, and a fifth inning throwing error which plated sophomore Zach Durfee.
But with two outs and two runners in scoring position in the sixth, Furman singled to right center to chase home both the tying and eventual game-winning runs. Iona added an insurance run on a wild pitch in the eighth.
Junior John Nolan took the tough luck loss for the Saints despite throwing six quality innings. He allowed just four hits and three runs (one earned), while walking four and striking out seven. The Gaels benefitted from four Siena errors, as three of their four runs scored were unearned.
The Saints return to action Wednesday for a non-conference contest at Army West Point at 3 p.m.
