Army West Point scored the first seven runs and held off a late charge to defeat Siena Baseball 9-6 at Doubleday Field. Senior Joe Drpich homered and drove in a pair of runs and classmate Phil Madonna also added two RBI while extending his hitting streak to 14 games for the Saints.
Army West Point (12-12) scored all of its runs over four consecutive frames spanning the third through sixth innings to win its fifth straight. The Black Knights opened the scoring with a three-run third, before pulling away with four runs in the fourth.
Siena (2-19) cracked the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the fifth on a two-out, two-run single by Madonna. The Saints then rallied as close as three late on the strength of a four-run eighth. An error and an RBI groundout plated the first two runs of the inning, while Drpich delivered the final two with his blast which proved to be the only hit of the frame.
Drake Titus led five Army West Point batters with multiple hit performances in going 4-5 with a both a pair of runs scored and RBI for the Black Knights which pounded out 16 hits, albeit 15 of which were singles. Jacob Hurtubise added a pair of hits, scored twice, and stole three bases atop the Army West Point order.
Senior Jordan Bishop contributed a pair of hits and reached base safely four times in five plate appearances for Siena which worked a season-high eight walks as a team, but stranded 11 base runners.
The Saints make their 2018 Capital Region debut Easter Sunday at RPI's Robison Field in nearby Troy vs. MAAC rival Marist. Doubleheader action commences at noon.
