TROY, NY -- As Yogi Berra once famously quipped, "It's déjà vu all over again." No phrase could be more fitting to sum up Siena Baseball's doubleheader sweep of defending MAAC Tournament Champion and preseason favorite Marist on Easter Sunday at RPI's Robison Field. Senior outfielder and No. 9 hitter Dan Lowndes delivered walk-off hits in both games as the Saints bamboozled the Red Foxes twice by identical 3-2 scores on April Fools' Day.
Game One: Siena 3, Marist 2
Lowndes cranked a walk-off solo home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth as Siena (4-19, 4-1) walked off in the opener. Lowndes tallied a pair of extra bases hits and scored twice to lead the Saints to victory in their de facto home opener.
Meanwhile, junior southpaw Tommy Miller went the distance to earn the win on the mound, scattering just six hits and a pair of runs while walking four and striking out nine.
Siena claimed a 2-0 lead heading into the eighth on a fourth inning, bases loaded suicide squeeze by Matt Hamel, and an RBI double in the home half of the seventh off the bat of Marcos Campos.
However, Marist (8-13, 2-3) drew even in the eighth on a two-run home run from Greg Kocinski.
But, in the bottom of ninth following a leadoff groundout by Hamel, Lowndes got a hold of Skyler Pichardo's 2-1 offering which he launched over the left field fence to secure the dramatic victory.
Game Two: Siena 3, Marist 2 (7)
Lowndes was the hero for the second time in three hours as his bases loaded, two-out single to centerfield forced in Brian Kelly with the winning run.
In an eerily, nearly identical game, the Saints once again harbored a 2-0 lead going into the penultimate inning. Siena scratched across a pair of a runs in the third on a sacrifice fly from Jordan Bishop, followed by an RBI single by Jonathan Crimmin.
But once more the Red Foxes utilized the long ball to erase a late deficit. Frankie Gregoire and Randy Taveras hit back-to-back home runs to draw Marist even at 2-2 in the sixth inning of the seven-inning contest.
In the final frame, the Saints worked the bases loaded with two outs for Lowndes. The clutch senior jumped all over the first pitch from Red Foxes' reliever Mike Coss for a ringing single to center, as the Siena dugout spilled out in celebration to mob Lowndes for the second time on the afternoon.
Brendan White joined Miller in silencing the Marist bats, which had entered the day leading the MAAC in hitting. The sophomore righthander tossed a complete game, surrendering six hits and two runs while walking two and striking out six to pick up the victory.
Kelly, Crimmin, and Phil Madonna each recorded a pair of hits apiece for the Saints, who cooled off the Red Foxes which had entered the afternoon winners of seven of their previous eight games.
Siena has now clinched each of its first two series to open conference play by taking two of three from last year's MAAC runners-up in Iona last weekend in New Rochelle, and the first two from the defending MAAC Tournament Champions in the Red Foxes. The Saints will look to complete the three-game sweep of rival Marist for the second time in three years, when action resumes with the series finale Monday at 1 p.m. back at Robison Field.
