MAAC frontrunner Quinnipiac scored the final nine runs to rally past Siena Baseball 12-4 in the series opener in Hamden, Connecticut. Phil Madonna led the Saints with two hits and a pair of RBI.
Ben Gibson and Andre Marrero each homered for Quinnipiac (15-17, 7-0), which scored in each of the first three innings while totaling nine runs. Gibson had a team-high four of the Bobcats' 17 hits and added five RBI, while Marrero added three hits and knocked in three runs.
Siena (6-24, 5-5) scored all four of its runs and tallied five of its seven hits during the second inning as part of a high scoring start, which saw the teams combine for 13 runs over the opening three innings of play. Madonna capped the frame with a two-run single, following RBI hits from Matt Hamel and Marcos Campos.
But after scoring three runs in the first, Quinnipiac added two in the second to reclaim the lead before pulling away with a four-run third. Marrero's two-run home run in the home half of the second put the Bobcats back in front for good, and Quinnipiac pounded out six hits in the third to extend their advantage to five.
The teams will conclude the series Saturday with doubleheader action slated to start at noon.
