Miller Pitches Saints to Series Opening Split With Manhattan

Box Score April 7, 2018

Game One Box Score | Game Two Box Score

LOUDONVILLE, NY -- Tommy Miller tossed the first nine-inning complete game shutout by a Siena Baseball hurler in three years, to help lead the Saints to a series-opening doubleheader split vs. Manhattan at Siena Field. Miller pitched Siena to a 4-0 triumph in the opener, while the Jaspers secured the split with a 3-1 win in the nightcap.

Game One: Siena 4, Manhattan 0
Miller recorded his third consecutive complete game victory to open MAAC play. The junior ace became the first Siena (5-21, 5-3) pitcher to throw a nine-inning complete game shutout since Matt Quintana on May 20, 2015 in the MAAC Tournament vs. Monmouth.

The defending MAAC Pitcher of the Week made a strong case to repeat again come Tuesday. Miller scattered five hits while walking three and striking out six to tally his first career shutout.

Meanwhile, his battery mate Phil Madonna provided all the offensive pop the Saints would need. The senior captain recorded three hits and scored three times to help guide Siena to victory in its 2018 Siena Field debut.

Brian Kelly opened the scoring with a first-inning sacrifice fly. The Saints tacked on a pair in the third on a sacrifice fly from Joe Drpich and an RBI groundout by Jordan Bishop, before rounding out the scoring when Madonna trotted home on a wild pitch to add an insurance run in the seventh.

Game Two: Manhattan 3, Siena 1 (7)
Matt Simonetti surrendered just one unearned run over a complete game performance to pitch Manhattan (15-13, 4-1) to the Saturday split. Simonetti allowed six hits and walked only one while striking out six.

Fabian Pena was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force in the first Jasper run in the third, and Matt Padre cushioned the lead with a key two-run single in the fifth.

Drpich delivered the lone Siena run with a fifth-inning single to score Marcos Campos. Campos and Kelly paced the Saints offensively with two hits apiece.

Siena will look to win its third straight conference series to open MAAC play when the Saints battle the Manhattan in the decisive rubber game of the series Sunday at noon.
