LOUDONVILLE, NY – With the 856th overall pick in the 29th Round of the 2018 Major League Baseball Draft, the San Francisco Giants selected Siena Baseball junior shortstop Marcos Campos. The Chino, California native becomes Siena College’s 25th Major League Baseball Draft pick, and the 17th since 1996.
“This is a true blessing,” said Campos. “To see my name get called was surreal. It was a dream come true. This would not have been possible without God, my family, friends, coaches, and especially my parents. The love and support they have given me throughout my life is a true blessing. I would also like to take the time to thank Coach Rossi and the coaching staff for giving me an opportunity to play Division I baseball, and helping me reach my dream. Playing for Siena was an experience I will never forget.”
Campos becomes the second player in Siena Baseball history to be drafted by San Francisco. Former Saints’ ace Matt Gage was selected in the 10th Round in 2014, and currently pitches for the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate the Sacramento River Cats.
A junior college transfer, Campos posted a stellar single season with Siena this spring after matriculating to Loudonville from Citrus Junior College in Glendora, California, where he starred for the previous two years. Named a Second Team All-MAAC selection, he both batted leadoff and started at shortstop in all 56 of Saints’ games this season.
Campos hit .322 and led Siena in both runs scored (41) and stolen bases (nine) this spring. He also ranked tied for third in the MAAC in doubles (17), fourth in hits (77), and ninth in total bases (96). Campos’ 17 doubles were tied for the fourth most in program single-season history, while his 77 hits were ninth most.
Campos registered a 22-game hit streak encompassing nearly all of both April and May in which he connected at a blistering .468 (44-94) clip. Overall, he recorded 24 multiple hit performances this season highlighted by nine three-hit efforts, and led the Saints with a .370 batting average during conference play which ranked eighth best in the MAAC.
Assuming Campos signs, he would become the 53rd player in Siena Baseball history to secure a professional contract, and the 36th to ink with a Major League Baseball organization. A pair of former Saints’ stars – Gage and Dan Swain, who was drafted in the 34th Round by the Arizona Diamondbacks last summer – are currently members of Major League Baseball organizations, and are competing at the minor league level. A total of four Siena Baseball greats – Billy Harrell (Indians, Red Sox), Gary Holle (Rangers), Tim Christman (Rockies), and John Lannan (Nationals, Phillies, Mets) – have ultimately reached the highest level, playing in the majors.
