Yale's Eoin Leonard birdied a second playoff hole to defeat Siena Golf freshman
Jared Nelson for the individual title at the season opening Cornell Invitational. As a team, Siena finished tied for 11
th overall at the 15-team event.
After firing back-to-back rounds of 67 in his collegiate debut to claim the individual lead following a tie for the lowest two-round score in program history Saturday, Nelson completed the 54-hole event by carding a solid 73 Sunday. However, Leonard shot 70 to make up a three-stroke deficit entering the Final Round, and force a playoff. After both players parred the par-4 seventh hole, Leonard birdied No. 8 to claim the individual crown.
Nelson wrapped up a brilliant collegiate debut with a three-round score of -6 207. He birdied 13 holes overall, while parring 34 at the 54-hole event.
Jack Bellardini and freshman
Brad Whitaker led the Saints individually on Sunday, firing rounds of 72 each. The duo finished tied for the weekend at 221. Bellardini tied for second in the field at the event with 39 pars.
Yale ran away with the team title as well, besting nearest competitor Dartmouth by 24 strokes. Siena finished tied with Binghamton, and was 21 strokes better than the other MAAC competitor in the field, Canisius.
The Saints return the course next weekend for Dartmouth's Quechee Club Intercollegiate in Quechee, Vermont.
