BETHLEHEM, PA – Siena Cross Country saw both of its teams bring home program records while competing at the 46th annual Paul Short Run in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania on Saturday. Senior Evans Kibet and Sydney Johnson each set new program records in their respective events, highlighting a day full of personal best times.
Overall, the women's squad finished 29th (741 points) in the College Gold 6K, while the men's team took 35th (893 points) in the College Gold 8K at the prestigious race that draws teams from all across the country. Utah State took home the men's championship for the third straight year, while Queen's University won on the women's side.
No stranger to holding program records, Kibet ran a 24:00.6 to finish 32nd individual in the 8k, taking the top individual finish among MAAC racers. The senior took down a 46-year-old school record in the process, surpassing the previous mark of 24:10, set by Siena legend Joe Rukanshagiza at the NCAA Division II Championships in 1973.
Johnson's personal best finish of 21:17.3 allowed her to surpass a former teammate in the program record books, and was good for an individual finish of 103rd. Johnson's make in the 6k beat out 2018-29 Siena Female Athlete of the Year Sarah Forman's 2017 finish at the event for the program record.
Finishing behind Kibet but holding their own in the event's top-tier race were junior Aidan Canavan (25:04.6, 191st), sophomore Owen Walker (25:06.5, 199th), senior Michael Rautter (25:35.3, 276th) and freshman Aidan Gillooley (25:37.0, 283rd).
Rounding out the top-5 finishes on the women's side in the gold race behind Johnson were sophomore Olivia Lomascolo (21:27.4, 126th), sophomore Regina Rosati (21:46.4, 167th), senior Camryn Johnson (21:58.8, 195th) and freshman Sophia Vinciguerra (22:07.3, 215th).
Aside from competing as a team in both "College Gold" races at the event, the Saints also saw multiple runners take part in the 8k & 6k open races, with junior Jacob Greski (26:50.1) recording the best finish in the race for the men and sophomore Mia Forster (23:47.8) doing so for the women.
Both cross country teams will continue their fall seasons next weekend, competing at the James Earley Invitational in Westfield, MA on Saturday, Oct. 12.
