Dylan D'Anna struck out five batters and walked one in four innings on the mound to begin his first go-around as the Sunday starter for Siena Baseball in 2019. Despite the effort, the Saints could not overcome a steady offensive stream early on from UCF, falling, 7-1, to cap their first weekend series of the year in Orlando, FL.
After a scoreless opening inning, Dalton Wingo sent home Griffin Bernardo from third on an RBI groundout to get the Knights (3-0) on the board in the bottom of the second. The home team extended its lead during the middle innings, with Matthew Mika sending Tyler Osik home on an RBI single in the fourth, and Dallas Beaver walking Chandler Robertson with the bases loaded in the home half of the fifth.
Mika came home on an RBI single from Jordan Rathbone in the sixth to solidify a series sweep and the 57th victory in 60 meetings all-time for UCF against the Saints.
Siena (0-3) broke through on the scoreboard in the top of the seventh, with
Zach Durfee drawing a free pass with two outs and the bases loaded to send in
Nico Ramos from third. The Green and Gold threatened thereafter, but UCF ended the potential rally with a strikeout of the following batter to close the frame.
UCF padded their lead with three runs in the bottom of the eighth, with a single from Brandon Hernandez sending home Rathbone and Wingo, and Hernandez crossing the plate two batters later on a sacrifice fly.
D'Anna took the loss on the mound for the Saints, while Jordan Spicer walked two and struck out five in five scoreless innings for the Knights. Offensively, five different Saints earned a hit in the affair, with Durfee standing as the team's top offensive performer.
Following the completion of its first weekend series of the 2019 season, Siena returns to the Sunshine State next weekend for a four-game series with 2018 NCAA Super Regional Participant Stetson Feb. 23-26. First pitch from DeLand, FL in Saturday evening's series opener is set for 6:30 PM.
