All nine members of Siena Water Polo who took the pool registered a point, as the Saints defeated the University of Redlands, 12-6, to begin a five-game west coast road trip Thursday evening in Redlands, California.
Earning its first win in program history over the Bulldogs in seven tried, Siena (4-7) came out of the gate with goals by
Georgia Vargas and
Anna Borton to complement five saves in the first period from goalie
Nichol Feldtz. After leading 3-1 at the end of the first quarter and 7-2 at the half, the Saints continued to find the back of the net. The team achieved double-digit scoring for the fourth straight game, doing so for the first time since Feb. 28-March 14, 2015.'
Continuing to lead the team in points and goals, junior captain
Diana Fernandez recorded a hat trick to move into seventh place all-time in career goals scored for Siena (158), passing
Lea Allen (2011-14). The Chicago, Illinois native was joined by sophomore
Sophia Torres and freshman
Bianca Prinsloo in totaling three points on the night, with both notching a trio of assists each. Borton, Vargas, sophomore
Kristen Burger and senior
Daniella Fuertes each found the back of the net twice, while senior
Terez Touhey scored once and
Sara Lopez added an assist. Feldtz totaled 15 saves in-goal, spending the entirety of the contest in-between-the-pipes.
The Saints are now off to their best start to a season since 2014, when they also began the year 4-7. The Victory also marked the team's first triumph over a west coast-based opponent since 2015.
Following the win, Siena will continue play in California at the Claremont Convergence in Claremont, CA, hosted by head coach
Tamara Perea's alma mater, Pomona-Pitzer. The Saints begin tournament play on Friday, March 1 against Whittier at 3:30 PM EST (12:30 PM PST).
