Siena Water Polo entered the win column for the first time in the 2019 season Saturday, splitting a pair of contests in day one of the Bison Invitation in Lewisburg, PA. The Saints defeated conference counterpart La Salle, 18-6, in the day's first action, later falling to No. 24 host school Bucknell, 11-3.
Extending its all-time record against the Explorers to 5-0, Siena came out firing on all cylinders, with seven different players recording a goal offensively. The team rushed out to a 9-4 lead at the half and never looked back, resulting in the team's best offensive performance since an 18-1 victory over Connecticut College on March 30, 2018. Sophomore
Kristen Burger led the team on the score sheet, recording six goals in the victory. Freshman
Bianca Prinsloo (four goals) and junior captain
Diana Fernandez (three goals) and added hat tricks, with seniors
Sara Lopez and
Daniella Fuertes (two goals) along with sophomore
Anna Borton and freshman
Georgia Vargas (one goal) also contributing.
The Saints took the pool later in the afternoon looking for revenge from a loss last week against the Bison, who had since entered the Collegiate Water Polo Association Top-25 poll at No. 24. The host team put up the first four goals of the match and take a 6-1 lead at the half. Vargas found the back of the net twice, with Borton adding the team's third score.
Siena returns to action at the Bison Invite Sunday in the Keystone State. The Saints will battle No. 17 Harvard at 8 AM and will conclude weekend action against Gannon at 2:40 PM.
