Concluding its opening weekend of MAAC play for the 2019 season, Siena Water Polo dropped a 13-9 decision to rival Iona in Lexington, VA Sunday afternoon.
After dropping its first two league games in a Saturday doubleheader, Siena (7-11) held an early lead in the affair, with junior
Diana Fernandez and sophomore
Kristen Burger each netting a goal to make it a 2-0 game with two minutes left in the third. The Gaels used the final three minutes to power ahead however, scoring three times to take a lead they would never relinquish.
The Gaels then moved along with four goals in the following two quarters to secure their second straight victory. Fernandez netted a team-high four goals in the affair, with Burger finishing with a pair and
Daniella Fuertes,
Bianca Prinsloo and
Georgia Vargas also contributing a goal each.
Following the conclusion of its opening conference weekend, Siena will have a weekend off before heading to Staten Island, NY March 23-24 to take part in four more league games.
