Siena Water Polo kicked off its 17th season of MAAC competition Saturday afternoon, competing in a doubleheader at a conference weekend hosted by Virginia Military Institute in Lexington, VA. The Saints fell, 12-5, to Villanova, before conceding a 9-5 result to host VMI.
Villanova sped out to a 4-0 lead after one quarter and took a 7-2 lead into the half, with sophomores
Sophia Torres and
Anna Borton getting on the board for the Saints. Siena could not keep up with the Wildcats' scoring pace, as they added five more goals in the second half to the Saints' three. Borton added a second half goal to finish with a pair, while freshman
Bianca Prinsloo and
Georgia Vargas also contributed offensively. Senior
Nichol Feldtz spent the duration of the game in-goal, making five saves.
The Saints returned to the pool for an evening contest against weekend host VMI and fell down heading into the half, with the Keydets controlling action with a 5-2 advantage. Siena cut the deficit to two after scoring a pair and nearly keeping VMI out of the goal in the third quarter, but the home team pulled away with three insurance goals in the final stanza. Vargas recorded a hat trick in the affair, while Torres and junior
Diana Fernandez also chipped in a goal each. Feltz made nine saves in-goal while also playing the entirety of the game in-between-the-pipes.
Following the sweep, Siena will look for its first conference win of the season on Sunday afternoon, closing out the weekend against Iona at 12:30 PM.
