Continuing a stretch of facing off against five straight ranked opponents, Siena Water Polo took to the pool for competition in Arizona for the first time in program history Saturday afternoon. The Saints fell, 10-2, to #21 San Diego State and 17-6 against #19 San Jose State to begin weekend play at the Sun Devil Invitational in Tempe, Arizona.
Facing off against both opponents for the first time ever, the Aztecs held the Saints off the board in the first half for the first time this team, taking a 7-0 lead into the first half. Freshman Bianca Prinsloo would net a goal in each of the final two periods for the Saints, while SDSU added an insurance goal in the third period and two in the final quarter. Seniors Kennedy Joseph and Nichol Feldtz split time in-between-the-pipes in the the affair, with Joseph collecting nine saves and Feltdz grabbing five.
Siena (7-17, 0-7) would begin its contest against the Spartans on a different note, taking a 1-1 tie into the second quarter thanks for a Diana Fernandez goal. San Jose State would pull out to a 6-3 advantage at the half after netting five balls in the following stanza, but it would not stop Fernandez from notching a hat trick on the day and four different Saints from scoring on the day. Both goalies also appeared in the second contest, with Joseph picking us five saves and Feldtz grabbing a pair.
Following the west coast action, Siena will conclude action at the Sun Devil Invitational against host #8 Arizona State Sunday afternoon, with game time set for 1 PM EST.
