LOUDONVILLE, NY – Siena Women's Soccer aims to both build upon its momentum and slow down red-hot Quinnipiac when the Saints host the reigning Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Champions and current league frontrunner on Senior Day Saturday at 1 p.m. at Hickey Field.
Siena (3-6-4, 2-1-3) will honor its eight true seniors –
Annie Bagnall,
Gabby DeAngelis,
Grace Dimkopoulos,
Angela Fini,
Grace George,
Melina Ortiz,
Marina Poljak, and
Rebecca Rolland – in a special pre-match ceremony at 12:40 p.m. prior to the program's penultimate regular season home match and final weekend home contest. The octet was a part of the program's third and most recent MAAC Championship as freshmen during the Spring 2021 COVID season, and look to continue towards building to bookend their careers with titles.
The resurgent Saints have shaken a slow start and carry a four-match unbeaten streak into Senior Day to place the program in the thick of the MAAC Tournament hunt. With four league contests remaining for Siena, the Green and Gold enter play currently in sixth place in the MAAC Standings, albeit just a win ahead of second and only a victory clear of ninth in a tight table. The top-six finishers will qualify for the MAAC Tournament which kicks off on Oct. 29.
In order to make a return trip to the postseason after missing out last fall, the Saints will need to navigate the toughest stretch of their conference schedule. Beginning with Wednesday's 1-1 draw at current third-place squad Canisius, Siena is in the midst of a four-match stretch where they play each of the top-four teams in the MAAC Standings, with three of those matches coming on the road. After taking on league-leading Quinnipiac (8-3, 6-0) Saturday, the Saints head to second-place Fairfield Wednesday and fourth-place Mount St. Mary's next weekend before wrapping up the regular season back at Hickey Field vs. current cellar dweller Iona on Oct. 25.
Meanwhile Quinnipiac has already secured an eighth straight trip to the MAAC Tournament, and can also claim at least a share of a second straight regular season title with a win and some help Saturday. Fresh off the program's first MAAC Championship last season, the Bobcats have won 11 straight conference contests – including both regular season and postseason play – while outscoring their league foes by a whopping 33-3 margin. Overall, Quinnipiac enters play winners of five straight. The Bobcats lead the MAAC in scoring, averaging 2.46 goals, and also boast the conference's leading scorer in Courtney Chochol (19 points).
Siena and Quinnipiac meet for the 20
th time, with the Saints holding a 9-7-3 edge between the budding MAAC rivals. The programs have split the past six matchups 2-2-2, and met three times so far in postseason play following the Bobcats addition to the MAAC, with the schools going 1-1-1 in such contests since 2016. Siena will look to avenge a 7-1 setback last fall in Hamden, promulgated by a four-goal performance from former Quinnipiac star Rebecca Cooke.
